The expositions in the villa represent a suitable beginning of every tour of the premises - they are equally suitable for ending the visit. Here, visitors have the useful opportunity to put into a broader context everything they get to see in other parts of the museum, thus amplifying the impression of their stay on the premises. In the building there are several expositions separated thematically, which - in summary - represent the cross-section of the several-thousand-year-old history of Landek itself as well as mining in the Ostrava region in general.
Exposition of primeval population at Landek
This part of the museum deals primarily with the period when mammoth hunters resided in the Ostrava region. It is based on the survey carried out here by the Archaeological Institute in Brno and presents the era called "Gravettien“ (21 to 23 thousand years ago), which held ground for findings that are unique even in worldwide terms. This concerns in particular the one-of-a-kind sculpture of the so-called Venus of Landek, and evidence of the first utilization of coal on this planet.Development of miner lamps
Open burners represent one of the symbols of miners‘ work, however, not many people know how sophisticated device this was. Old miners succeeded not only in keeping the naked flame under control even in the environment threatening with presence of inflammable gasses, they also managed to tell from the flame the presence of these gasses and thus be aware of the impending danger. The exhibition does not include only the classic (and long unused) open burners - it captures the whole development from primitive oil lamps to modern accumulator lamps.History of coal mining
The modern history of coal mining in the Ostrava region began in the 18th century and saw a complicated development in rapidly changing social and economic conditions. Among other things, the exhibits and panels show who were the real pioneers of coal mining and mine entrepreneurs in the past - visitors have a rare opportunity to get acquainted with the actual fate of the people whose names they heard so far only in the verses of Petr Bezruč. Above all, there are photos and other documents showing the difficult work under ground. Basic mining occupations
A miner is not a mere man with a pneumatic drill - not only because these days excavation is carried out using much more powerful and sophisticated technology but primarily because exploitation of coal calls for cooperation of people of many various specializations. The exposition shows what these activities comprise. Methods of coal mining
It is virtually impossible for a common man to make an inspection of a large winding tower, in this exposition, however, its meticulous reduced model is available. Of course, there is a series of other models demonstrating the ways of present-day coal mining, including complete mining lines placed in a mock-up of a coal seam. Some of the actual equipment is not missing as well - the dimensions of which allow for its display in the museum building. Most of all, visitors will learn the purpose of all the things used in the underground.
